In Islam male/female pray side by side in Ka'ba/Masjid-e-Nabwi from Prophet time. I had been to Mecca and Medina and had performed many haj and umera. I also had lived in Saudi Arabia for almost 14 years. It was surprise for me to observe that male and female in both these holly places pray together yet outside is different. The question draw my attention towards the point that why and when the separation had started between male and female. I am of the opinion that this had started during the time of Imam Ahmed ben Hanbil which is popularly known as a struggle between al-muʿtazilah verses Hanbali, a revolt of tribal code of ethics against Prophetic ideals and sign of which in history were visible even during Prophets' life time in Medina.
