Pakistan security forces unleash brutal crackdown with lethal force against unarmed protesters in AJK, killing more than 50 civilians in a bid to terrorize residents and clear the streets, but massive crowds exceeding 150,000 are converging on Rawalakot from all sides in a show of resilience - UKJNews

Muzaffarabad, AJK 12 June 2026 – Thousands of residents across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have taken to the streets in a powerful display of discontent, with protesters converging from every corner of the region amid demands for greater political representation, economic relief, and an end to alleged government overreach.
Large convoys, including families, women, and community groups, have marched toward Muzaffarabad and other key areas from districts such as Rawalakot (Poonch), Kotli, and beyond. Organizers from the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC or JAAC) report participation in the tens of thousands, with some estimates exceeding 150,000 across multiple locations. Demonstrators are calling for justice, civil rights, subsidised essentials, lower electricity tariffs, and reforms to the electoral system — particularly the abolition of 12 reserved seats for Kashmiri refugees living outside AJK.

The movement intensified after the AJK Supreme Court upheld the reserved seats, prompting a region-wide strike despite authorities declaring the JAAC a "proscribed organisation" under anti-terrorism laws. Clashes in Rawalakot and elsewhere have resulted in at least 11–15 deaths and dozens of injuries. Security forces imposed restrictions, including a communications blackout (suspended internet and mobile services until June 12), yet protests have persisted with resilience.

As of June 12, 2026, marches continue in AJK despite bounties on some leaders and heightened security. The situation remains tense but fluid, with growing calls for peaceful negotiations. This wave of protests underscores long-standing grievances in the region and has now drawn international scrutiny from diaspora actions and cross-border solidarity. Further updates are anticipated as events unfold.
