Appeal to Human Rights Organisations and the International Community on the Killing of Peace Activist Sha Zaib Habib in Rawalakot, Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). We urgently call upon the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and all global human rights defenders to immediately investigate gross human rights violations in Azad Kashmir (Pakistan-administered Jammu & Kashmir).
On June 5, 2026, in Khai Gala, Rawalakot, security forces opened fire without provocation on a peaceful procession led by the Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Tragically, peace and human rights activist ShaZaib Habib was killed by bullets. Committee leader Umar Nazir Kashmir (also referred to as Umar Nazeer) sustained injuries and was hospitalised. Reports confirm a heavy exchange of fire at a police checkpoint, resulting in civilian and police casualties amid the chaos.
Authorities have imposed a near-total communications blackout across the region, restricting mobile services and access to information. Security forces have conducted raids, arrests of core committee members, and intimidation campaigns targeting activists and their families. This has created an atmosphere of fear and prevented independent verification of events on the ground.
This incident is not isolated. It forms part of a pattern of suppression against the Awami Action Committee's peaceful demands for basic rights, fair governance, and an end to exploitation in AJK. Protesters have faced lethal force while exercising their fundamental rights to assembly and expression.
We demand:
1: An independent, impartial international investigation into the killing of Sha Zaib Habib and the firing on peaceful demonstrators.
2: Immediate lifting of the communications blackout and restoration of all services.
3: Release of all arrested activists and an end to raids and intimidation.
4: Accountability for those responsible for ordering and carrying out unprovoked violence against civilians.
5: Protection of human rights defenders and journalists covering the situation in AJK.
Urgent Call to Action for the Azad Kashmir Diaspora and Global Citizens To the Azad Kashmir diaspora worldwide and all people of conscience: The people of AJK are under siege with restricted communication and ongoing threats. Immediately organise and join protests in front of Pakistani embassies and consulates across the world. Raise your voices loudly to expose these atrocities and demand justice. Share verified information, photos, and videos to break the blackout and inform the global community.
Your solidarity can save lives and pressure authorities to halt the violence. Peaceful protest is a powerful tool—use it now.
“They have put us in a total blackout and are shooting people. Immediately begin protests and tell the world what is happening in Jammu Kashmir.” — Azad Kashmir Awami Action Committee Leader.
