Five Dead, Including Three Adult Victims and Two Teenage Suspects, in Shooting at San Diego's Largest Mosque. 'Hate rhetoric' under investigation, say police - UKJNews

On Monday, May 18, 2026, a shooting occurred at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD) in the Clairemont neighborhood, leaving three adult men dead at the scene and two teenage suspects dead nearby from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Authorities described it as every community's worst nightmare and are investigating it as a potential hate crime.

Timeline and Response

San Diego Police Department (SDPD) received a call reporting an active shooter around 11:43 a.m. PDT. Officers arrived within about four minutes and found three deceased adult victims outside the mosque. They immediately entered the building and adjacent school to clear the area.

Additional gunfire reports came from nearby blocks. A landscaper in the 7100 block of Solerno was shot at but unharmed. Officers later located a vehicle in the 3800 block of Hatton Street containing the two suspects, both deceased from self-inflicted wounds. No officers fired shots, and the threat was neutralized by around 1 p.m.

Police praised the rapid response, noting it likely prevented further casualties. One victim was a security guard who played a "pivotal role" in limiting the attack. All students, teachers, and staff at the attached school were reported safe. A reunification center was set up at 4125 Hathaway Street.

Victims and Suspects

  • Victims: Three adult males (one confirmed as a security guard). Names have not been publicly released as of the latest updates.
  • Suspects: Two teenagers (reported as ages 17 and 19, or 17 and 18 in some briefings). They were found dead in a vehicle a few blocks away. Some law enforcement sources identified them as Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, but this has not been officially confirmed by police in all reports.

No motive has been publicly confirmed, though officials are treating it as a potential hate crime due to the location. The FBI is assisting, with agents on scene for evidence collection and victim support.

Official Reactions

  • SDPD Chief Scott Wahl: Called it a dynamic and impressive police response. Extended condolences to families and emphasized no ongoing threat.

  • FBI Special Agent in Charge Mark Remily (or similar spelling in reports): Offered resources for the investigation and urged the public to submit tips via tips.fbi.gov or 1-800-CALL-FBI.
  • Mayor Todd Gloria: Expressed support for the Muslim community, stating hate has no place in San Diego, and praised first responders.
  • Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom: Issued a statement condemning the violence at a place of worship and offering condolences.

The Islamic Center of San Diego, the city's largest mosque, has set up a Victim & Family Support Fund. Community members and leaders have expressed shock and called for unity.

This remains an active investigation. As of early May 19, 2026, authorities continue gathering evidence, and more details on identities and motive are expected in the coming days. Public tips are encouraged.
