" Twitter might see its biggest change yet, if its new owner Elon Musk is to be believed. 

Replying to a tweet on Sunday asking if Twitter was going to increase its character limit from 280 to 4000, the billionaire replied in the affirmative.

Musk responded with a single word, ‘Yes’ and did not elaborate further. 

While an increased character limit might be a welcome change, 4000 characters might be a bit too much. That’s over 14 times the current limit. 

To put it in context, 4,000 characters is somewhere between 570 to 1000 words with spaces; roughly the size of a university essay. We doubt anyone on Twitter is keen to read such a lengthy post.

However, this isn’t the first time Musk has stated his intention to increase Twitter’s character count.

In November, Musk responded to a similar tweet that suggested increasing the character limit to 1000. 

‘It’s on the todo [sic] list’ replied Musk. 

The last time Twitter increased its character limit was in 2017 when its founder Jack Dorsey was still CEO. 

Twitter was started in 2006 as a microblogging platform but five years ago, Dorsey doubled the size of tweets from 140 to 280 characters. 

‘It’s a good constraint for us, and it allows for of-the-moment brevity.’ Dorsey had said of the 140-character limit at the time. 

The original 140 limit had been based on SMS’ 160 character limit, as Twitter delivered posts from accounts you followed as text messages."
