"Conservatives have warned Liz Truss she faces another big rebellion over spending cuts after MPs forced her to U-turn on cutting taxes for the highest earners. 

The Prime Minister and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng were forced to backtrack on plans to scrap the top 45p rate of income tax – a tax cut that would have benefited those who earn more than £150,000 – amid intense pressure from their own MPs. 

But Tory MPs warned the pair they could face a rebellion of a similar size – putting the Government’s Commons majority under threat – if they take an axe to public spending to help cover the cost of £43bn of remaining tax cuts announced in the controversial mini-Budget last month. 

Mr Kwarteng on Monday indicated he could approve real-terms spending cuts worth billions to Government departments and hundreds of pounds a year to individuals’ benefits by allowing both Whitehall budgets and welfare payment increases to fall behind inflation."
