The people of Jammu & Kashmir have yet to exercise their right to self-determination to decide their future status.
The rigid and colonialistic mindset of those who formulate Indo-Pak policy formulation, incapable to create any hope and new light for the people of both Indo-Pak but they need to keep the excuses alive for a hostile environment which enable them to divert the public attention from the real issues at home toward artificial conflicts like Jammu & Kashmir. This is how they are duping their own population and going on for the last 70 years.
The question of Jammu & Kashmir, in my opinion, was and is the easiest issue to solve in the satisfaction and interest of all parties had they believe in democracy rather than theories of conspiracies.
Keep your troops over there where they are positioning right now, allow people from both sides, from Aksi Chin to Mangla and from Lakhanpure to Hunza so to elect their representatives under the UN supervision.
The elected representatives can agree upon the draft constitution both to satisfy the national question within Jammu and Kashmir and with its three neighbors, China, India, and Pakistan.
Indo-Pak can keep joint defense, foreign affairs with the cooperation of China and let the people of Jammu & Kashmir govern by themselves.
The future is on one hand more freedom, more democracy, more human rights, yet there are demands for more integration both within societies and between the diverse cultures, nations, and even between the states. The European experience is a case in point, leading the human civilization into a new direction, never mind even the United Kingdom had terminated its treaty of accession or little bit discontents here and there. The human civilizations are full of discontents and irritants whenever and wherever they had adopted new ways to explore new destinations.
The solution of Jammu & Kashmir lies with its own people not in Washington or London. Islamabad and Delhi must cooperate not only for Jammu & Kashmir but also for their own people who shared common history and culture yet state barriers don't even allow them to meet each other in a free, friendly, and peaceful environment, their loved ones waiting on each side of the border and those still alive but their places childhood memories on another side of the border let alone the people of Jammu & Kashmir whose immediate family members are living on both sides of the border.
To be the prison of the Utopia idealism or over idealism and religious hatred for short-sighted political gains are nothing but self-destruction, self-deception, and politics of suicidal ends proved times and again.
