Drinking is not forbidden in Islam. Every thing which is forbidden or prohabited must carry a penalty with it. For drink, both from Qur'an and Sunnah there is no penalty. It was during Hazrat Umar that some people were disturbing others under heavy drink. Then Hazrart Umar by making a logical reasoning had deduced out of qadaf law decided for 80 lashes and that was a: heavy drinking b: disturbing others. Haram in Islam is law maxim. In Qur'an the maximum wording is "it is better to avoid it" which mean a choice for individual to make a judgement. It comes under moral code not legal. That is why in Hanifi school, in the begning it was not forbidden and light drinking was allowed. After Ibrahim Nakayi and Imam Abu Hanifa a gradul shift started by Imam Abu Yousuf in one direction and Al-Shabani in another direction. That was because Islam right after Prophet's death started toward conservativeism and tribalism. So, drink is not Haram in Islam but not heavy drinking. There are lot of fabrications in the name of Islam promulgated by modern political Islamist to influence societies by projecting Alchol drinking, Hijab and Interest, zina, fashi and auryani but no evidence in early literature of Islam.
