"The killing of Mr. Jan came just days after unknown assailants gunned down another key Haqqani network leader, Nasiruddin Haqqani, in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. While the U.S. considers the Haqqani network, responsible for the 2011 attack on the American embassy in Kabul, a terrorist organization, the group enjoys support from parts of the Pakistani security establishment and operates out of Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area,"
