BBC News - Syria unrest: UN resolution in tatters after vetoes

BBC News - Syria unrest: UN resolution in tatters after vetoes:
"They removed explicit reference to the elements of the Arab peace plan - particularly a timetable spelling out a process for Mr Assad to hand powers to a deputy who would oversee preparations for new elections. Although they insisted that support for the plan itself was a red line."

I wonder what was the point to force Assad to hand powers to his deputy? How that could be useful to improve standard of democracy and human rights for Syrian people, is a secret yet to be known?
It was clear from day one that both Israeli and Saudis were deeply interested to influence Syrian affairs in their own national interest.
International alliance lead by US and France had overlooked Israeli/Saudi aspect where evidence that armed groups been funded and armed by anti Syrian regimes. On contrary all blame was put on Assad regime. This approach was to reduce the strength of democratic opposition and gradually to allow al-Qaeda supported armed groups to gain control. I am of the opinion that this was backed by Saudis so to Talbanize Syrian society to make it an other Afghanistan.
There fore Russian point of view was more rational and would be more helpful for Syrian society to reform itself for better democracy.
To replace Assad dictatorship with al-Qaeda sponsored terror network would not be helpful for Syrian people. Pushing Syria towards another Afghanistan would be a catastrophic game plan, not only for Syrian people but for the whole region.
