Analysis: Do the Taliban represent Pashtuns? by Ali K Chishti:
The assumption been projected over the years by Pakistani-Saudi secret services with the help of west that Taliban represents indigenous aspiration of a pashtoon culture, is an over-simplification and distortion. In fact this is to promote new-colonialism by using religious sentiments of the ignorant masses. The over usage of religious terms such as "Shari'ah," "Caliphat," "Islamic System," "Nizam-e-Mustafa," etc both in Afghanistan and Pakistan by attacking indigenous cultural values and to distort its natural process of evolution links it very much with whabby/salfi colonial drive by focusing poor masses. This distortion on one hand allowing ruling elite to divert public attention from the real issues and on other to create space for alien whabby cultural aggression. The fact that pashtoon culture itself is under attack of Taliban which is a whabby movement of neo-colonialism, who do not recognize peoples freedom including right to self-determination. The whabby/salfi colonial drive is not limited to AfPak but among the Muslim masses all over world. Ali Chishti is high lighting pashtoon aspect but ignoring the real force behind neo-colonial drive in the name of Islam.

"Umar Muhammad, a Taliban spokesman from Helmand, denied they were a Pashtun movement. "We have Tajiks and Uzbeks fighting with us," he said. "Maulvi Sayed Ghiasuddin, a Badakhshi, was a member of the original ten-member Supreme Shura of the Taliban. We are a Muslim army fighting for the freedom of Afghanistan from infidel oppressors and wants freedom of all Afghans from them.""
